But assuming you do, the question is if very close to the same results is good enough? Ultimately it depends on your ambitions, your budget and what the goal of the release is. If you feel you can indeed get very close to the same results then you could consider DIY'ing it. A good mastering engineer should be able to surpass even a decent DIY job by some margin. Mastering is a specialized craft that focuses on fixing, refining and optimizing. Quite often knowing the mastering basics yourself (to quote you) simply isn't enough.

We all had made our own master versions and some of us tried mastering other students work. The guy doing the mastering was amazing, he heard things nobody in the class heard, all changes he made were small, gradual adjustments, but at the end his version blew everyone of the class' attempts out the ballpark, it wasn't even a little bit close. It was mastering directly from the 1/4" mix tape played off an Otari MTR-10 to a vinyl cutting machine, interesting project to see being done, I recorded and mixed one of the songs on the record, this was a class final project, just before CD's came out. I've only spent a limited time in a mastering studio watching as part of an audio degree I received years ago. I hope this doesn't come across as elitist (which some masterning engineers are accused of being) but there really is no magic bullet.

Everything is sounding great, but my issue is getting that + 3 to 5dB in over all output volume that popular industry mastered music is getting.
